ITAP researchers working on exciton condensates in double quantum wells theoretically predicted a new type of force that is not know yet in other condensed matter systems. The new effect, coined as Exciton Condensate Force, emerges due to the phenomenon of condensation and derives its origin from the Coulomb interaction. The strength of the force depends on the concentration of excitons and is in the approximate range of 10^(-9) Newtons for samples prepared with typical dimensions of 10^3 micron square. In addition to the theoretical description of the Exciton Condensate Force, experimental methods are proposed to measure the effect. A semi popular introduction of this new effect can be found with the references to the published work here.

Energy Institute of the İstanbul Technical University (İTÜ) and ITAP signed an MOU for the establishment of a new organization for research and research training. The project entitled “International Research Platform on Quantum Technologies in Energy” is planned to operate on an inter university and international levels.
The project is focused on advancing research in the areas of energy storage, energy transformation, new critical technologies, materials science and related fundamental and applied sciences between the nanoscopic and microscopic scales from low to room temperatures. The platform will also be in close collaboration with a large number of R&D companies nationally and internationally including the Energy Technopark of the İstanbul Technical University.
In addition to the research efforts in these fields, the organization is planned to create a mobility of senior and young researchers, postdoctoral fellows and students. The organization, combining the efforts in İTÜ's İstanbul, ITAP's Turunç/Marmaris and other university campuses, will also continue international summer schools, workshops and conferences that have been organized by ITAP since 2006 under the general title of International Advanced Research School (IARS).
The organization which will be steered by a scientific consortium formed by researchers nationwide, will also spend effort in finding, tracing and training specially talented national and international students to attract them to undergradute as well as graduate programs across the nation. Additionally, outreach programs for the preuniversity students and the society in general will be conducted throughout the country in collaboration with ITAP's Physics Olympiad School and Center for Science & Society.

The 2013 Eurasia-Pacific meeting on strongly correlated electrons was organized as a conference held in Korea supported by APCTP/Korea, ITAP/Turkey and Academia Sinica (Taiwan). Nearly 120 participants and distinguished speakers were present from the Asia-Pacific, North American and European countries. This year the main themes were high temperature superconductors, topological insulators and topological superconductors. Reports and exciting discoveries on new materials with topological properties were presented. By the Eurasia Pacific 2013 organization committee's decision in Korea, the 2014 Eurasia-Pacific meeting is planned to continue in Turkey under the local organization of ITAP, supported by APCTP/Korea, Academia Sinica/Taiwan and the Chinese Academy of Sciences/China. Eurasia-Pacific meetings were started in 2011 and continued in 2012 and both held at ITAP campuses in Turunç. The main themes in the 2014 meeting will continue to be the most recent scientific and technological progress high temperature superconductivity and topological properties of new materials, and the meeting will be organized in the form of an international summer school followed by a workshop. Turkish Accelerator and Radiation Laboratory at Ankara (TARLA) a Facility of Turkish Accelerator Center (TAC) is under construction in Ankara University Gölbaşı Campus. TARLA will be a superconducting electron linac based infrared free electron laser (IR FEL) and Bremsstrahlung facility. TARLA’s thermionic DC gun flashed its first electron beam with 170 keV energy on April/11/2013, to drive the injector and the accelerator modules to reach 40 MeV. In the framework of the TAC project, a project team is working on the design of four proposed GeV scale accelerator facilities, also: SASE-FEL: A 1-6 GeV electron linear accelerator to generate x-rays via the Self Amplified Spontaneous Emission-Free Electron Laser. Synchrotron Radiation (SR): An electron synchrotron storage ring with an energy of at least 3 GeV which can be used as a third generation light source in the hard x-ray region using insertion devices. Proton Accelerator (PA): A proton accelerator complex with a final energy in the range 0.25-2 GeV, which could serve as a neutron spallation source, a radioactive ion beam facility, as well as a number of lower energy facilities for use in medicine and other sciences. Particle Factory (PF): A proposed super charm factory based on colliding a 1-GeV electron beam against a 3.6 GeV positron beam. More information about TAC project is available at: here.

The confirmation of the 2012 observations of the Higgs Boson was reported on March/14/2013 by CERN. The experiments were done at CERN-LHC's ATLAS and CMS detectors 53 years after it was predicted by Peter Higgs in 1960 and the Higgs mechanism was first used in the development of the Standart Model of Glashow-Weinberg and Salam between 1960 and 1967. We congratulate all theorists, experimentalists, engineers and technicians involved.

ITAP Astronomical Observatory, thanks to the enthusiastic support of Nazife and Mehmet Oluğtugal, constructed a 4m. diameter, computer controlled astronomical dome for its 14" telescope. The construction of the dome is completed as of Feb.20 2011. We plan to start observations of the sun and the other deep sky objects soon with a much higher quality photos taken by our CCD cameras. Our main astronomical activities including small scale research on binary stars will then continue with higher quality observations. Our new dome also coincides with our plans to start in August 2011, exciting science/society activities and physics festivals targeting a wide range of participants including primary, secondary and high school students (together with the parents) and teachers, university students and the public. Check our 2011 program regularly for the announcements of the astronomy and physics festivals. Pictures of the observatory dome can be found here: 1, 2
